Halloween has always been one of my favorite times of the year.  I grew up in Ohio, so fall weather brought about the changing colors of my surroundings, along with my Mom’s beautiful decorations, holiday gatherings and treats!  Oh, and my birthday, of course! 😉 #Sagittarius (November 27 if anyone is marking their calendars) But I digress, back to Halloween.  As I matured my enthusiasm for this glorious day of thrills and chills faded.  Costumes in my size are hard to come by, expensive and not all that original.  But in this day and age of social media, namely, Pinterest, there are several sources of inspiration being shared by those with minds oh so creative!  Which inspired me to create “Miz Cook’s Top 5 DIY Halloween Costumes, Curvy Style”.  These are SUPER cute, require little to no seamstress ability, can be put together with items you already have in your closet or around the house and best of all, let you join in on the fun and fantasy of Halloween!

It’s Raining Men I can’t lie guys, this one is my absolute FAV!!!!!! It’s fun, flirty and easy peasy! Best of all, you don’t need a bunch of crazy make up or clothes you don’t already have to pull this off!  Just take pics from your male Facebook friends or Google images and copy them to cardstock or paper, attach with the clear thread or fishing line to the spine of the umbrella and BOOM!  You’re in business!
Here’s what you need:
  • Umbrella
  • Raincoat
  • Rain boots
  • Clear thread or fishing line
  • Paper or cardboard cut outs of men’s faces
Curvy Cat Woman Nothing says sexy like a voluptuous woman in all black.  Throw in some cat ears and a tail and you’ve got a costume even Eartha Kitt would envy!
Here’s what you need:
  • Black leggings & tight-fitting black top (you can also use a black body suit of the snug fitting variety)
  • Cat ears-I totally suggest making them yourself with your own hair, lots of hair spray and bobby pins.  However, if you are a short, funky haired diva you could always opt out and use a conventional kitty head band
  • A cat tail-again, I am an advocate for making your own.  But if you’re short on time, supplies and creativity, you can always find these accessories at your local Halloween store.
Sexy Scarecrow Another easy one to pull off!  This one does require some face painting, but nothing you can’t handle!  I promise!
Here’s what you need:
  • A pair of distressed jeans or denim overalls
  • A plaid or flannel shirt, tie it up in the front to give your look that sexy vibe
  • Ribbon for your hair-either tie it up in cute pig tails or use it as a pretty head band.  I suggest orange, in staying with the fall color scheme.
  • Face paint-get creative with rosy red cheeks, stitching and a big, beautiful grin!  Maybe throw on some false eye lashes for a little Va Va Va VOOM!
Plus Size Poison Ivy This comic book villain is a favorite of woman and girls each year!  You don’t need the official licensed costume to pull this one off, just a little creativity and a lot of green and not the kind with dead presidents printed on it!
Here’s what you need:
  • A green curve hugging dress or body suit
  • A red wig
  • Ivy garland-use this to create a crown for your auburn tresses and to adorn your waist and thighs if you dare!
  • Black stockings (why not really amp up your sexy and use thigh highs and garters?!)
Rosie the Riveter- This iconic female costume is one for the gal who takes pride in her femininity, strength and ability to get shit done!  And who doesn’t love that pin up hair-do Rosie sports?!
Here’s what you need:
  • Jeans
  • Denim top
  • Red bandanna
  • The innate ability to flex your right bicep while rocking ruby red lips and look sexy AF doing it!
This list just scratches the surface when it comes to DIY and Halloween.  And remember, anything a slim woman can do, baby girl, you can do it too!  Don’t limit your searches to the words “plus size”.  You can find more ideas and inspiration on YouTube and Pinterest and to be quite honest, your Facebook and IG feeds! Take what your friends have done and put your own spin on it! Be bold, be beautiful and be free!
